To wear or not to wear? That is the question. Comfortable, casual, fancy and hipster are the fashionable themes displayed within a college student’s closet. During the winter, when the weather is frigid and the walk to class is unbearable, style may not be first priority. However, the season does not prevent Bonaventure students from imagining the sidewalks as their personal runway. Leave the dirty sweatpants behind and put together a stylish ensemble, for winter fashion is upon us.

A scarf is a must-have accessory for the torturous temperatures. Not only do they serve as a neck blanket, but they also dress up any old outfit. The versatile styles of the scarf add to its basic brilliance. With knit, reversible, floral, neutral, dark and infinity scarves in the stores, students have the ability to find just the right one for them.

Amber Williams, a freshman journalism and mass communication major, believes the warm accessory serves as both a functional and fashionable piece.

“Neutral-colored scarves are my favorite because you can pair them with anything,” Williams said. “A light brown scarf would enhance a plain outfit. Add black leggings to the outfit and you are set.”

Leggings, an ongoing trend, are essential for comfort and casual wear. Rather than fitting into a pair of tight skinny jeans, leggings permit a relaxed feel.

“When I wear my beloved black leggings, I throw on a baggy sweater,” Williams said. “Not only am I cozy for the rest of my day, I look and feel good.”

The sweater and leggings combination is an excellent outlet for style-conscious students on the run. The ensemble is casual but deserves a few compliments throughout the day.

Now a question remains to be answered: what about shoes? Are slippers socially acceptable to wear to class? The answer is no. Boots are the perfect detail to incorporate with any look. UGGs are ancient. Combat, leather, modern, ankle and tall boots are the many looks that achieve the winter-ready style.

Alison Thomas, a freshman marketing major, enjoys chic footwear.

“I love tall riding boots,” Thomas said. “They can be paired with a sweatshirt or even a fancy sweater.

“Many of my friends own combat boots. I think they look great and make a bold statement.”

Bradley Wigsten, a freshman strategic communication major, is a representative for guys on campus with a sense of style.

Wigsten does not concern himself with the new trends in magazines and websites. However, he believes that people should put effort into their appearance.

“It is important to avoid wearing clothes with obvious stains,” Wigsten said. “They distract people. It’s not the best representation of yourself.”

Wigsten aims to stay warm by sporting weather-appropriate clothing. Yet he enjoys an impressive appearance from time to time.

“I like to wear a nice sweater vest, button-down shirt, pea coat or boat shoes. They are my go-to pieces,” said Wigsten.

2013 has been a winter to remember: the negative temperatures, the endless amounts of snow and, of course, the slippery sidewalks. With the elements against students at Bonaventure, a comfortable state-of-being is a must. Yet fashion cannot be forgotten through the bitter season. There are places to be and work to be done. Why not look great while doing it?
