There are different ways for students to be active and stay in shape on campus.  St. Bonaventure University’s Running Club gives students the opportunity to meet new friends in addition to living a healthy lifestyle.

SBU’s Running Club began last semester as a club with only four members and had a simple mission that emphasized a passion for running and living a healthy lifestyle.

Jake Witter, a senior childhood studies major, said  the club could promote wellness in students.

“I started the running club because I realize how important a club like this can be to our campus through advocating healthier life choices,” Witter said. “I didn’t understand why we didn’t have a club like this, especially when so many students love to run. A club like this is important because it brings everyone together from all types of running backgrounds.”

Jeff Dempsey, a freshman education major, said the running club was a great opportunity for him to maintain a healthy lifestyle with other students who understand the value of running and staying fit.

“I joined the running club because it’s a great way to stay in shape,” Dempsey said. “You have experienced runners who know what they’re talking about when it comes to workouts and pacing yourself throughout the run.”

One of the benefits of running club is its flexibility with students’ schedules and skill levels. It allows students to compete at the college level without a difficult workout, in addition to running for enjoyment.

“The club allows students who still wish to compete at the college level without having to deal with a strenuous workout schedule,” Witter said. “We welcome anyone whether you want to compete or not.”

Last semester, Witter contacted Rob DeFazio about starting a new running club.  Witter and DeFazio both agreed it might be a reach, but Witter pursued the idea.

Witter said due to obstacles of starting a new club, the initial runs only consisted of himself and a few other Bonaventure students, including Virginia Csillag, Andrew Belfield and Adriana Tuarez.

Another challenge in beginning the group was advertising it to students. With the help of students and faculty on campus, the club was able to attract prospective participants.

“During Spring Into Bona’s, (the group) and I were hoping for a great turnout, and we did get one,” Witter said. “We saw hope for the fall semester and were happy to include Dr. Roger Keener (director of the Wellness Center) and Mary Adekson (associate professor of counselor education) as our advisors, and have Prof. Allison Barnes (adjunct professor of physical education) as our transportation advisor.  Since then, we have had great turnouts and continue to get new members. I am truly thankful for everyone who has joined this club because if it weren’t for them, this club wouldn’t exist.”

Running Club has practices Monday through Saturday, with an activity day on Sunday. Sunday is an opportunity for the club to all hang out, have fun and rest from the week’s workout.  The team also participates in competitions throughout the semester.
