Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, the world changed.

Eleven years later, students, faculty members and members of the community, gathered in front of St. Joseph’s Oratory to
remember the events. The ceremony started at approximately1 p.m.

Fr. Ed Coughlin, O.F.M. and sophomore theology majors Daniel Adrat and Elena Robillard read speeches during the ceremony. The ceremony included the colorguard of the Seneca Battalion R.O.T.C. during which Taps was played.

The ceremony started with a speech from Br. Coughlin, followed by Adrat’s reading from the prophet Isaiah. Robillard
then read the prayer of the faithful in memory of those whose lives were lost. Br. Coughlin then recited the prayer that Pope Benedict XI gave at Ground Zero in 2008, during his visit to the United States.

A 9/11 monument debuted this year outside the Oratory. It is divided in half with one side bearing the Prayer of St. Francis and the other commemorating those who lost their lives, in particular, Fr. Mychal Judge O.F.M., the Chaplin of the Fire Department of New York and the first official casualty of the attacks. Judge was a ‘57 graduate.

Followed by the readings, Sister Margaret Carney O.S.F., S.T.D., led the procession of attendees, who placed a flower given to them, on the memorial commemorating those who lost their lives.

About 150 people were in attendance. Overall, the ceremony lasted about half an hour. “It was an honor to pay respect while
in uniform to the victims of September 11 as well as the service members who have given their lives as a result of the attacks,”
said Cadet Anthony Watts, a junior history major.

Adrat, who read a passage from the prophet Isaiah, said it was special to be involved.

“It meant a lot to me because my father was a first responder so being able to read in front of all those people and being able to remember the loss is very powerful,” Adrat said.
