The golf team looks to rebound from two consecutive last-place finishes as it heads to Farmville, Va., today for the Manor Intercollegiate, hosted by Longwood.

Longwood is hosting a field of nine schools: Bucknell, Delaware, George Washington, Seton Hall, Towson, Wagner, and Hampden Sydney.

Last year, Longwood opened its season with a win in Farmville, as it finished with a combined 54-hole score of 875.  The Lancers dominated the competition, beating second-place High Point by 29 shots.

The spring golf season has been a struggle for the Bonnies.  They placed last in both the Fireline Towson Invitational (March 30 – April 1) and Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State (April 7) and 15th of 16 in the Rebath Snowman Getaway (Feb. 27 and 28).

Last Sunday, the Bonnies finished with a three-round score of 969 (plus-117), eight shots back from Towson at Penn State.

Senior Kevin Lewis expressed his frustration with the Bonnies’ finishes.

“We have been making some stupid mistakes that can be avoidable,” said Lewis. “Things like three-putting, not sticking to the game plan and trying to execute shots that aren’t there have been really hurting us. We need to improve on our strategy before the round and figure out ways to put the ball in the hole on that day.”

Bowling Green won the tournament with a score of 901 (plus-49), with five players finishing in the top 21 spots amongst the field.

Junior Brian McKenna led all Bonnies, finishing with a three-round score of 236, earning a tie for 39th place. Lewis finished four shots behind McKenna, finishing tied for 55th.

Coach John Powers has stayed positive throughout the losses and has his sights set on the A-10 Champi-onships April 27 – 29 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

“It’s a good thing we are facing some tough challenges right now; it will really help us down the road,” Powers said.  “The scores might not show it, but these tournaments are really helping towards our big-picture goals.”

Lewis said he believes his team can find success at A-10s.

“I really think that after the top couple of teams that the field is wide open,” Lewis said. “I think that we can finish in the top five if we all play well and stick to the game plan.”
