The Student Government Association (SGA) met Monday night in the Doyle Trustees’ Room to discuss updates on the Hickey Dining Hall’s overcrowding issue and the Zimride carpooling proposition, followed by numerous club presentations.

Emily Deragon, SGA vice president, provided an update regarding the ongoing overcrowding at the Hickey.

The proposal to have the lunch hour moved from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30p.m. has been approved. The next step will be to have the Faculty Senate vote on the proposal at its March 9 meeting.

Deragon highlighted how the change would be beneficial to the current situation in the Hickey during the lunchtime rush on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“There are about 110 students who don’t have a place to sit,”Deragon said.

A few students opposed to the possibility voiced their concerns. These concerns included how the time shift could cause students to have a long extension of classes in the morning and prevent them from eating until the mid-afternoon.

Students provided opinions about Zimride, a national carpooling website enabling students to find rides based on entered information. Concerns about the possible endorsement of the program involved cost and student interest. Some students suggested alternatives, such as expanding the SBU Carpool Facebook page.

Afterward, organizations and clubs held their presentations.

– The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) announced its upcoming dinner, to be held on March 18 in the Doyle Dining Room. Christopher Sterling, club president, additionally encouraged students to attend its free Mardi Gras party tomorrow in the Rathskeller.

– Asian Students in Action (ASIA) presented plans to hold an ‘International Day’ event. This event would include a dinner where different international foods would be showcased.

– The Black Student Union (BSU) expressed its gratitude toward the abundant attendance at both its Martin Luther King Commemoration in January and Black History Celebration in February. Plans are being formulated for a soul food dinner and dance party. More details will come soon about the event, club leaders said.

– Representatives from VOICES revealed their fundraising total for the Go Red for Women campaign from early February. President Amy Jarrell stated the total is $216.88, slightly more than the club’s original goal of $200. Upcoming VOICES events include a Women’s History Week and a program called “In Defense of Men and Women” March 22.

– The Step Team informed people about its upcoming show in April, where step teams from other schools will be performing. As for volunteering, members said they have been traveling to local schools and teaching students how to step.

– Spectrum is holding its ally training, focusing on listening skills, in April. Members are attending the LGBT Conference in Albany at the end of March.

– The SBU Hip-Hop Team recounted its performances at two previous basketball games. It is also having a show in April and its membership has expanded to 36 students.

– Bonacoustics talked about its participation singing at this season’s basketball games and mentioned its upcoming show, scheduled for April 15.

– The Pep Band now has 13 members and has purchased new T-shirts with its budget.

Deragon announced the upcoming Spring Weekend T-shirt design contest, which SGA sponsors. The contest will be seeking designs entered by students for the front and back of the T-shirts.

Students were also encouraged to nominate people for the 22nd Annual Father Joe Doino Awards, to be held April 3 at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Entry forms are available on my.sbu.edu and can be submitted until March 23.
